The highest summit in Africa

This trek begins above Machame, a picturesque mountain village south of Kilimanjaro. After crossing the forest and then the tall grasses and giant heather of the moors, the trail continues through some rocks to the Shira plateau. Then, it continues counter-clockwise, under the south face of Kibo to reach the Lava Tower with its superb panorama. The ascent of the Barranco Wall, a difficult but challenging climb, approaches Uhuru Peak via Barafu, a ridge adjacent to the South East Valley. The climb from Barafu offers incredible views of Mawenzi Peak, a volcanic remnant of Kilimanjaro.

We will have a 45 minute drive from Moshi to Machame Gate. The road passes through the village of Machame which is located on the lower slopes of the mountain.

We leave the park gate and walk through the rainforest on a winding trail over a ridge. At lower elevations, the trail can be muddy and slippery. Gaiters and trekking poles are a good idea. We continue for a short distance until we reach Machame Camp.

Shortly after, we arrive at the second junction that goes towards the Arrow glacier. We continue now towards the camp of Barranco. Although you will end the day at about the same altitude as when you started, this day is very important for acclimatization and will help your body prepare for summit day.

We continue to Camp Barafu. You have completed the southern circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. Here we make camp with a view of the summit in the distance.

Day 6

Barafu camp at the top of Kilimanjaro and descent to Mweka camp

Very early in the morning (around midnight), we attack towards the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. Soon we will be towards Stella Point on the edge of the crater. This is the most mentally and physically difficult part of the trek. At Stella Point, you will stop for a short rest and be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you will ever see. Faster hikers can see the sunrise from the summit.

From Stella Point, it is possible to get snow all the way to the top. Once you reach Uhuru Peak, you have reached the highest point of Mount Kilimanjaro and the African continent!

From the summit, we begin our descent by continuing straight to Mweka camp, stopping at Barafu for lunch. We arrive at Mweka camp in the afternoon and enjoy our last evening on the mountain.
